Breeding Services
Friesian Quest, LLC is a full service breeding facility, with a state of the art laboratory on site, with California Licensed Veterinary support by Barry Liebelt DVM , Equine Reproduction Specialist with over 25 years of experience & Robert Hildreth DVM. Friesian Quest reserves the right to deny access if any horse that has not been vaccinated according to our protocol set forth in our contract. Each horse must have a current health certificate executed by a licensed doctor of veterinary medicine as well. This is for your mares protection as well as for the protection of those horses currently residing at Friesian Quest. Friesian Quest does reserve the right to refuse shipment and can ask a horse to leave anytime at the sole discretion of Friesian Quest. It is very rare that a horse delivery will not be accepted as transported, or is asked to leave as most abide by the contract accepted by Friesian Quest. Contracts are serviced on a first come first serve basis. We encourage parties interested in these services to walk through our facilities and ask questions by appointment only.
MARE OWNERS
Friesian Quest is most happy to assist mare owners with as much or as little support as desired by our clients. From initial breeding to foaling. Our facility includes breeding stocks, a Laboratory that supports breeding your mare at our facility or shipping to your desired location by your desired transportation vendor. We also have large foaling stalls, digital camera monitoring systems, and paddocks with shelters for those first few months mare & foal care. During our contract process the mare owner can choose what services they want provided for their mare. Here are some of the Current Services available for our mare owners:
- Mare Breeding on Farm: Most of our mare owners contract and have the appropriate releases on file with Friesian Quest prior to arrival. It is not uncommon that the mare is transported to us at the commencement of her heat cycle. ( Mare is lifting tail and peeing or showing interest in the other gender) The mare is teased by a stallion on a daily basis while she is in the safe confines of her enclosure. Her follicle size is monitored by our staff as well as a licensed veterinarian until it is time to breed your mare. We find that many mares have individual needs and there are considerations with regard to the stallion you are using - we adjust our program to those needs. Each owner is contacted with a plan and options of the best way to have your mare settle. Once your mare is bred, most mares remain onsite through two pregnancy checks, the first at 17 days, and the second at 45 days by ultra-sound prior to shipping home.
- Mare Foaling: We carefully monitor your mare as she enters the labor process with notification with each physical change to the owner, if the owner desires. Mare owners are also welcome to participate with the labor process. We provide assistance to the mare as needed during the foaling process, however we prefer to allow nature to take its appropriate course with our supervision. Once the foal is born, we imprint train the foal, give the appropriate vaccines, give enema's as needed, as well as disinfect the umbilical cord. The foal is monitored for its ability to stand, suckle, urinate, and defecate. with documentation.
- Complete Brood Mare Package: Some Friesian mare owners desire to breed their mare, yet they need support from choosing a stallion to showing that offspring at the annual inspections. This whole process can be intimating to the first time Friesian buyer/breeder or is difficult to manage when you are working full time, or if your mare is normally maintained at a facility not geared toward breeding and& foaling support. One would ask themselves....When can I breed my mare, and what age? Who do I bred my mare to? How do contract the breeding? How do I register the foal? How do I get the mare pregnant? What is the best diet during her pregnancy and after? What shots does my mare need during her pregnancy? How do I DNA and Chip the foal? How do I train and show the foal to the inspectors? These are just a few of the items that you will need to address. We are experienced in all aspects of these processes and support at the level that you need.

Our outside stallions have may have different needs due to their competition calendar, current breeding contracts, owner needs, and we are most happy to provide service by appointment or stand your stallion while keeping him in condition and maintaining his needs. We have and will continue to stand FPS and FPZV Approved Stallions as well as other breeds. We do not provide live cover services. Please contact Friesian Quest for references, space availability and current pricing. Here are a few of our standard options.
- Collection by appointment - Stallion not boarded at Friesian Quest: The stallion owner makes an appointment for the collection. The stallion is transported into Friesian Quest, the process involves stimulation of the stallion to perform, cleaning of the stallion, using a phantom & AV to perform the collection, bathing and reward for the stallion after the collection, the stallion leaves after the collection is processed and is deemed usable.
- Collection on As Need Basis - Stallion boarded at Friesian Quest: The stallion owner contracts to have the stallion boarded at Friesian Quest for the sole purpose of breeding only. The stallion will exercise at liberty daily in the working arena under supervision, and be maintained in a barn stall only - no exceptions during breeding season. The stallions contracts are performed by the horse and Friesian quest, meaning that if the stallion is to be collected and shipped, or if the mare is on farm to be on-farm AI'd, it will be done according to the contract. The advantage to having your contracted mare on farm to be AI'd is that the mare can be bred on Non-shipping days, like weekends.
- Collection on As Need Basis - Stallion boarded and Training at Friesian Quest: The stallion owner contracts to have the stallion boarded at Friesian Quest for the purpose of breeding and maintaining current level of training. The stallion will be matched with a trainer that is experienced with the needs and discipline of the stallion. On non-training days the stallion will exercise at liberty in the working arena under supervision, and be maintained in a barn stall only - no exceptions during breeding season.
